Lawrence King was a 300 pound, black Republican pedophile who was in charge of the Franklin Credit Union. He was alleged to have operated a call-boy business in partnership with Harold Andersen, then publisher of the Omaha Herald, among others.
King enjoyed Republican society and took his conservative politics seriously. In 1987 he donated $25,350 to Citizens for America, an organization that arranged speaking tours around the country for Lt. Col. Oliver North.
In October 1988, King’s Franklin Community Credit Union was raided by the FBI and IRS. A month later the Treasury Department filed suit to recover the $34 million that had disappeared from Franklin’s vaults under King’s management. King became the subject of the Nebraska Senate’s investigation conducted by the specially created “Franklin Committee” to probe charges of embezzlement. In November 1988, King’s offices were raided by the FBI and $40 million was discovered missing. Within weeks, the Nebraska Senate, which initially opened the inquiry to find out where the money had gone, instead found itself questioning young adults and teenagers who said that they had been child prostitutes. Many had been residents of Boystown – though both boys and girls were eventually involved. Social workers and state child-care administrators accused King of running a child prostitution ring. The charges grew, with the former police chief of Omaha, the publisher of the state’s largest daily newspaper, and several other political associates of King, finding themselves accused of patronizing the child prostitution ring.
King served a 15-year federal prison sentence, but only for defrauding the Omaha-based credit union. But the magazines “Avvenimenti” of Italy and “Pronto” of Spain, among others, have charged that King’s crimes were more serious: that he ran a national child prostitution ring that serviced the political and business elite of both Republican and Democratic parties. Child victims of King’s operations charged him with participation in at least one SATANIC RITUAL MURDER of a child several years ago. The “Washington Post”, “New York Times”, “Village Voice” and “National Law Journal” covered the full range of accusations after the story broke in November of 1988. King’s money machinations were also linked to the Iran-Contra affair, and some say that King provided the CIA with information garnered from his alleged activities as a “pimp” for the high and mighty.
“Pronto”, the Barcelona-based, largest circulation weekly in Spain with 4.5 million readers, reported that the Lawrence E. King child prostitution scandal “appears to directly implicate politicos of the state of Nebraska and Washington, D.C. who are very close to the White House and George Bush himself.”
The weekly stated that Roy Stephens, a private investigator who has worked on the case and heads the MISSING YOUTH FOUNDATION, “says there is reason to believe THAT THE CIA IS DIRECTLY IMPLICATED,” and that the “FBI refuses to help in the investigation and has SABOTAGED any efforts” to get to the bottom of the story.
Stephens says that “Paul Bonacci directly accused President Bush of being implicated” in the affair when he testified before the Franklin Committee. Bonacci, who had been one of the child prostitutes, is identified by leading child-abuse experts as a well-informed, credible witness.
Lawrence King was no stranger to President Bush. And Lawrence King was no stranger to Craig Spence. Several of the Omaha child prostitutes testified that they had traveled to Washington, D.C. with King in private planes to attend political events which were followed by [CHILD] SEX PARTIES. King and Spence had much in common. Not only were they both Republican Party activists but they had gone into business together procuring prostitutes for Washington’s elite.
Bush’s name had repeatedly surfaced in the Nebraska scandal. But his name was first put into print in July 1989, a little less than a month after the Washington call boy affair had first made headlines. Omaha’s leading daily newspaper reported, “One child, who has been under psychiatric care, is said to believe she saw George Bush at one of King’s parties.”
Before his arrest, King had commuted often to Washington, D.C. He was a business partner in a call-boy operation run by the late Craig Spence, whose antics were the subject of a week-long series published by the Washington Times in July 1989. The expose was immediately occasioned by the resignation of an aide to Elizabeth Dole. In his resignation letter, the aide complained that one of Spence’s male prostitutes, had blackmailed him with threats of disclosure. The Times reported that Spence, a former ABC reporter, was said to have been running a CIA blackmail operation: Spence’s Victorian Mansion on Wyoming Avenue, where he often threw parties for Washington’s power elite, was “planted with electronic bugs and video recording equipment that, according to homosexual call-boys and others who routinely visited the house, was used to make incriminating tapes to blackmail guests.” The parties were attended by the likes of William Casey, Ted Koppel, John Mitchell and Eric Severeid. A political tempest threatened when Spence’s credit card receipts implicated Reagan and Bush appointees, but few names reached the public print.
Four months after the story broke, Spence was found dead at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Boston. Police ruled his death a suicide.
Another ramrod in the CIA’s male prostitution network was Ronald Roskens, former chancellor of the University of Nebraska. Lawrence King had been one of his closest “advisers.” Roskens was fired from the position in 1989 when his involvement in homosexual orgies was reported to the university’s board of regents and verified by them. A year later, President George Bush called Roskens to Washington to head the Agency of International Development (AID), commonly utilized as a cover in CIA operations overseas. AID also disburses $7 billion in nonmilitary foreign aid, and thus wields enormous geopolitical power.
This was really one of the biggest scandals in recent US history. The story received some newspaper coverage but there was a TV News Media blackout on the subject. For this reason, most Americans have never heard of it.
Former republican Senator John Decamp was involved in the production a documentary called “Conspiracy of Silence” that was to air May 3, 1994 on the Discovery Channel. This documentary exposed a network of religious leaders and Washington politicians who flew children to Washington D.C. for sex orgies. At the last minute before airing, unknown congressmen threatened the TV Cable industry with restrictive legislation if this documentary was aired.
Almost immediately, the rights to the documentary were purchased by unknown persons who had ordered all copies destroyed. Reported at least $500,000 was paid for the rights to buy and destroy it. A copy of this videotape was furnished anonymously to former Nebraska state senator and attorney John De Camp who made it available to retired F.B.I. chief, Ted L. Gunderson. While the video quality is not top grade, this tape is a blockbuster in what is revealed by the participants involved. Rogerson was convicted of perverting the course of justice and lying to the 1999 Police Integrity Commission. Ratzinger is also the author of a May 2001 letter to bishops stating that the “Crimine solicitationies” law (regarding strict secrecy in sex abuse cases) is still in effect.
The law to which Ratzinger’s letter referred was issued by Pope John XXIII 40 years ago (a link to the PDF of the document can be found in Boucher’s entry). The law itself is chilling, as it describes a mandatory condition of secrecy for both the perpetrators and victims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests.
The 69-page Latin document bearing the seal of Pope John XXIII was sent to every bishop in the world.
The instructions outline a policy of ‘strictest’ secrecy in dealing with allegations of sexual abuse and threatens those who speak out with excommunication. They also call for the victim to take an oath of secrecy at the time of making a complaint to Church officials. It states that the instructions are to `be diligently stored in the secret archives of the Curia [Vatican] as strictly confidential. Nor is it to be published nor added to with any commentaries.’
[...] Bishops are instructed to pursue these cases `in the most secretive way… restrained by a perpetual silence… and everyone… is to observe the strictest secret which is commonly regarded as a secret of the Holy Office… under the penalty of excommunication’.
Lawyers point to a letter the Vatican sent to bishops in May 2001 clearly stating the 1962 instruction was in force until then. The letter is signed by Cardinal Ratzinger, the most powerful man in Rome beside the Pope and who heads the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith – the office which ran the Inquisition in the Middle Ages.
We can believe what we wish about Benedict XVI’s youthful nationalism or lack thereof. ROME – Pope John Paul II summoned U.S. cardinals to the Vatican two years ago, at the height of the church’s sex abuse crisis, and made a stirring pronouncement.
“People need to know,” he stressed to them, “that there is no place in the priesthood and religious life for those who would harm the young.”
Yet today, one block from the Vatican, a fugitive priest lives in a church building with rooftop views of St. Peter’s Basilica and the pope’s apartment. The Rev. Joseph Henn’s superiors have let him stay with them, even though they say he has refused their instructions to go back to Phoenix and face charges that he molested three boys.
The Rev. Joseph Henn is a U.S. fugitive wanted on 13 molestation charges. He refuses to return to Phoenix, and his order has let him stay in Rome.
A short cab ride north, the Rev. Barry Bossa, an ex-con and fugitive, has found similar sanctuary in a leafy neighborhood of sidewalk cafes and low-rise apartments. His religious bosses hastily moved him out of the United States two years ago as his criminal record and new allegations began to emerge.
Here in the heart of Catholicism, church leaders are giving refuge to priests who face allegations of sexual abuse in other countries. The Dallas Morning News located the men – some of them admitted abusers – as part of a yearlong investigation into the global movements of accused priests.
Some are stationed in the comfort of their religious orders’ world headquarters. One strolls by St. Peter’s Square en route to his job. Another leads English-language tours at ancient church burial grounds. And until recently, one man was serving his house arrest across the street from the Vatican.
Dr. Navarro-Valls previously declined to comment on The News’ investigation, which found more than 200 accused priests, brothers and other Catholic workers hiding across international borders and living in unsuspecting communities, often with the church’s support. About 30 of the men were wanted by law enforcement in another country.
The Vatican has long refused to address why it has not acted on numerous abuse complaints made against a close ally of the pope, the Rev. Marcial Maciel, the revered founder and leader of the Legion of Christ order in Rome.
The Vatican continued to employ an acknowledged abuser as a foreign diplomat. The Vatican had promoted the Rev. Daniel Pater despite his 1995 financial settlement with an Ohio victim and two warnings from Monsignor Breslin. Then in late 2002, it moved him up again, this time to temporarily run the papal embassy in India. He stepped down last year, as The News was preparing a story about the case.
And the Vatican has kept former Boston Cardinal Bernard Law, the U.S. church leader most associated with protecting priests, on several decision-making panels and recently gave him a job leading a historic Roman basilica.
Rev. James Tully navigated his way past tourists in St. Peter’s Square without interruption and headed for a yellow Vatican postal box on the side of St. Peter’s Basilica, where the pope regularly blesses the faithful. Father Tully dropped in a couple of letters, then walked on to a nearby bus stop. Father Tully, who declined to be interviewed, was moved to Rome two years ago, about a month after he was accused of sexual misconduct for the third time.
A few miles south of the Vatican, the Rev. Richard Mataconis works as an English-language guide at the Catacombs of St. Callistus, a popular stop for Catholics visiting Rome. He mingles with the adults and children on his tours, talking them through the ancient burial sites of popes and Catholic martyrs.Father Mataconis was sued two years ago by two men who accused him of abusing them in the 1970s at the New York junior seminary they attended. The suit ultimately was dismissed because the men had missed the deadline for filing a legal claim.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Victims of sexual abuse by priests demonstrated at the Vatican on Thursday demanding that Pope Benedict open up files on paedophile Catholic clerics worldwide and immediately defrock all “predator priests.”
The demonstration came as a leading cardinal denounced what he called a “conspiracy” to discredit the Catholic Church and said he could understand why some bishops hushed up cases of paedophilia so as not to harm the Church’s good name.
Four leaders of the U.S.-based Survivor Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), all of whom were sexually abused by priests, including being raped and sodomised, held up photos of themselves as children and signs reading “Stop the Secrecy Now.”
“I would ask the pope if he would please open up the files from the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and turn over all the information to the police,” said Barbara Blaine, the president of SNAP.
She was referring to the Department once headed by the pope when he was a cardinal, which judges cases of sexual abuse.
“I would also ask him to make a public order to all bishops across the globe that all predator priests must be removed from ministry immediately,” she said minutes before police took away the SNAP leaders’ passports and led them away for questioning.
A scandal of alleged cover-ups of sexual abuse of children by priests has been convulsing the Roman Catholic Church in Europe with even more intensity than a similar one that hit the United States eight years ago.
But this time it has come perilously close to the pope himself as victims groups have said they want to know how he handled cases before his election in 2005

IT COULD hardly get worse. Sex scandals are breaking over the Catholic church with such fury (see article) that the Vatican has felt bound to defend Pope Benedict XVI himself. Children at some Catholic schools in Germany have been systematically abused; paedophiles were transferred to other jobs, rather than dismissed or prosecuted. Abuse has surfaced in Austria and the Netherlands. In Ireland Cardinal Sean Brady, the primate, has admitted that he was present in 1975 when two teenage boys were persuaded to sign oaths of silence about their abuse by Father Brendan Smyth. The church defrocked Smyth, but nobody, including Cardinal Brady, told the police about his crimes and he remained free to abuse boys for two decades.
Yet denial still reigns. Bishop Christopher Jones, head of the Irish episcopate’s committee on family affairs, has complained that the church is being singled out, when most abuse happens inside families and other organisations. “Why this huge isolation of the church and this huge focus on cover-up in the church when it has been going on for centuries?” he asked.
He is right that other secretive outfits (orphanages in authoritarian countries, say) are home to shameful abuse, but that misses the point.

The Pope, answering questions on board his flight to Washington, addressed one of the toughest issues facing him on his US visit: the sex scandals that arose in 2002 and which forced the country’s Roman Catholic Church to pay more than $2 billion (£1 billion) in abuse settlements.
The Pope’s visit was the first by a pontiff to the US since the scandal erupted. Six US dioceses have declared bankruptcy in recent years because of its financial toll.
In February 2004 US bishops issued a report on abuse of children by priests stretching over 52 years, beginning in 1950. It found that 10,667 people had accused priests of child sexual abuse between 1950 and 2002.
In January 2002 The Boston Globe reported that 130 people had been abused by John Geoghan, a former priest, over three decades.

Fresh revelations have been made directly implicating Pope Benedict XVI in mishandling the case of a paedophile priest in his former archdiocese of Munich.
According to the New York Times, the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was copied in on a memo from his deputy in which the priest was transferred to parish duties in Bavaria that brought him into contact with children. As a result of that decision by the then vicar-general, Father Gerhard Gruber, the priest was able to continue abusing boys, for which he was later tried and convicted.
Father Peter Hullerman, who was known to be a paedophile, was originally moved to Munich to allow him to undergo therapy. The future pope attended a meeting in January 1980 at which the transfer was agreed, the New York Times reported today. The paper said the reason for the priest’s transfer was clear, even though not explicitly stated.
The allegations come a day after the Vatican responded angrily to the allegation that as a cardinal the pope had ignored an American diocese’s request that another predatory priest should be defrocked. Hullermann had been removed from his previous parish in September 1980 and did not deny the allegations made against him. Correspondence at the end of that year referred to a formal request that he should be transferred for psychiatric treatment in Munich.
Although sexual abuse of boys was not explicitly mentioned in the letter from Essen, it stated:
“Reports from the congregation in which he was last active made us aware that Chaplain Hullermann presented a danger that caused us to immediately withdraw him from pastoral duties.” It warned of possible legal action but suggested that Hullermann could teach religion “at a girls’ school”.
A report, drawn up by one of Ratzinger’s closest colleagues before the meeting, stated that a young chaplain needed “medical-psychotherapeutic treatment in Munich” and a place to live with “an understanding colleague”. It presented the priest from Essen as a “very talented man, who could be used in a variety of ways”. As soon as he arrived, however, Hullermann was placed in a parish where he continued to abuse boys before being convicted six years later.
The suggestion that the pope was more closely involved in the case than previously suggested followed allegations that while he was head of the congregation in Rome in the mid-1990s, he acceded to a plea from an American priest, Father Lawrence Murphy, not to be disciplined or defrocked for abusing as many as 200 deaf boys at a school where the chaplain taught between 1950 and 1974. Murphy died a few months later and there have been allegations that earlier bishops in his US diocese had ignored the complaints against him and that the diocese tried to hush the matter up.
The pope has apologised for the way the church handled allegations without accepting any personal responsibility for his actions in Munich nor during his 24 years as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome. But the accusations are getting closer to him all the time.

Rev. Lawrence C. Murphy at a school for the deaf in Wisconsin is the epitome of the corruption and power of the Catholic Church. For years, he sexually abused little boys. Little boys that were deaf.Little boys that couldn’t communicate like everyone else.
According to an excerpt in the NY Times, the boys reported the abuse to every type of official they could think of that he was a danger, according to the victims and church documents.
They told other priests. They told three archbishops of Milwaukee. They told two police departments and the district attorney. They used sign language, written affidavits and graphic gestures to show what exactly Father Murphy had done to them. But their reports fell on the deaf ears of hearing people.

But when approached by ABCNEWS in Rome last week with questions of allegations against Maciel, Ratzinger became visibly upset and actually slapped this reporter’s hand. “Come to me when the moment is given,”Ratzinger told ABCNEWS, “not yet.” “Cardinal Ratzinger is sheltering Maciel, protecting him,” said Berry, who expressed concerns that no response was being given to the allegations against the man charged with sex abuse.
Church abuse scandal reaches pope’s brother
VATICAN CITY – Church abuse scandals in Germany have reached the older brother of Pope Benedict XVI and are creeping ever closer to the pontiff himself.
Benedict, 82, was archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982 when he was brought to the Vatican to head the body responsible for investigating abuse cases. During that time, he came under criticism for decreeing that even the most serious abuse cases must first be investigated internally.
Separately, the Regensburg Diocese told AP it will investigate allegations of physical and sexual abuse that have swirled around a renowned choir led by the Benedict’s brother, the Rev. Georg Ratzinger. So far, the sex abuse allegations predate Georg Ratzinger’s term as choir director.

SHEVILLE — The former music minister of St. Eugene Catholic Church faces up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to a federal charge of producing child pornography.
Paul Lawrence Berrell, 29, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Asheville to one count of production of child pornography, according to a statement by U.S. Attorney Edward Ryan.

If there is one single Roman Catholic prelate who could not argue the same, it is pope Benedict XVI. Archbishop Simonis demonstrated a shocking naiveté by his choice of words. “Wir haben es nicht gewusst,” he said, German for “we didn’t know”. This phrase recalls the excuse German citizens used after the war to explain their failure to prevent atrocities committed by the Nazi regime.

To avoid impending charges of murder, Pope Calixtus II (1119–24) desecrated the alleged tomb of St Peter and fled to Constantinople with “silver panels from the doors”, “thick plates of gold” that had covered the altars and “a solid gold statue” (AHistory of the Popes, McCabe, op. cit.).
