“Gentiles need to die….goyim have no place in the world.”  This was part of a rambling diatribe of racist slurs heard on Israel’s Channel 10 this weekend, The perpetrator?  Leader of the Israeli Sephardic community, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, founder of the Shas Party, part of the Likud coalition headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

This isn’t the first time Rabbi Yosef has said these things.  The immensely popular Likudist Rabbi, when not calling for the slaughter of Palestinians or advocating the destruction of Christianity, offers recipes, marriage tips and lots of advice on how Jews can rule the world as the new “master race.”  Rabbi Yosef is a combination of Jon Stewart, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson with more than a touch of Adolf Hitler thrown in for moderation.

The letter was signed by Avraham Stern and the later Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.

A couple of years ago, “The Naked Archeologist,” a relatively entertaining cable television show hosted by a former IDF commando, “debunked” the entire Christian religion.  A family tomb, reputedly that of the family of Jesus, was unearthed in Jerusalem.  Removed from this tomb were the inscribed coffins, reputedly with the skeletal remains of, not only Jesus himself, but Mary Magdalene and the Apostle Peter, and any number of other biblical figures believed elsewhere.

Most significant is the claim of finding the remains of St. Peter.  The Catholic Church is founded on the belief that Peter is entombed in Rome, his burial spot being the spiritual and geographical center of the Catholic religion.

Rabbi Yosef is the spiritual head of the Shas Party, a member of the Likud coalition, which won 11 seats in the recent election and supports Prime Minister Netanyahu.  Oddly, however, the Shas Party claims that the Ashkenazi Jews, those of European dissent, wrongly control Israel and are not genuinely members of “g-d’s chosen.”  Things have been rocky for the Shas Party as their former leader, Areh Dari, onetime Minister of the Interior, was jailed in 2000 for allegedly accepting bribes.  Since that time, Shas has joined with the extremist Likud Party of Netanyahu.
Yosef is said to despise Netanyahu, an American born Ashkenazi, but accepts Likud rule based on similar views of the role of goyim in the world.

That was how Tom Johnston, the historian and former Secretary of State for Scotland, described Scotland’s noble landowners in 1909 in his book, Our Scots Noble Families. Back then land and its ownership was a hot topic both in the towns and the countryside. Lloyd George’s famous People’s Budget of 1909 had proposed a land tax and radical opinion was still heavily influenced by the ideas of the American social reformer Henry George. Winston Churchill delivered a rousing speech in favour of land reform in the King’s Theatre in Edinburgh in July of the same year and crofters in the Highlands were engaged in land raids.

One hundred years later, land reform is again a hot topic. Or is it? Following some important new laws in the first session of the Scottish Parliament, the subject has slipped off the agenda . Perhaps one reason for the waning of interest is the perception that land issues are matters concerning the remoter parts of the Highlands and Islands and downtrodden crofting communities. There are issues there aplenty but the land question is about much more than that.

THE REASON ITS NOW “OFF TOPIC” IS BECAUSE POLITIONS ,OUR “GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES”AND THIER “BIG BUSINESS” BACKERS, STAND TO LOOSE MONEY…….YES EVEN MY “BELOVED” SNP!!!

It is about why common land in the heart of Edinburgh has been let for a penny a year to a commercial property company which will gain outright ownership if the proposed leasehold reform bill proposed by the SNP Government goes through. It is about why Scottish Ministers have paid £2.3 million to buy land in Perthshire that is common land and should never have been sold in the first place. It is about why, in this day and age, children still have no legal rights to inherit land. It is about why, at a time of austerity and proposed caps on public benefits of £26,000 per family, it seems to be quite alright to hand out millions in agricultural subsidies to some of the richest families in the country. It’s about a housing bubble built on cheap credit that has denied young people a place to live even as Gordon Brown told us in his first Budget in 1997 that “I will not allow house prices to get out of control”. It is about how property speculators can pocket millions of pounds in rising land values on the back of publicly funded infrastructure.

Above all, it is about how the whole edifice of Scots land law has been constructed to legitimise what is in many cases little more than theft – just what Tom Johnston was complaining of more than a century ago. In the past I’ve been cautious about making such a case but my discoveries over the past few years have convinced me that he had a point.

THE THEFT CONTINUES TODAY

A few months ago I uncovered the title deeds of a 400-acre parcel of common land in East Perthshire and was intrigued to find out that in 1986 it had been split up among the three landowners whose land bounded it, irrespective of the fact that many more people potentially had an interest in it.

Not only that, but these landowners only had rights of use in the commonty and no rights of property. Even the Keeper of the Registers of Scotland made a note in the Register of Sasines “agent aware granters apparently only have title to rights in pasturage”. In other words the conveyancing solicitor (who shall remain nameless for the moment) knew that the farmers had no property rights in the common but nevertheless drafted and submitted the deed for recording.

They grabbed it, and despite all the blatant defects this deed  actually enjoys the full protection of the Scots law of property.

Call me naive but is this not what would, in any other circumstances, count as theft?  If it was stolen property surely I would be guilty of reset? If it was legitimately owned by others,then I am a simple thief.

Maybe Pierre-Joseph Proudhon was right when he said that property is theft. Scotland’s history certainly bears this out This year is the 450th anniversary of the Reformation in Scotland . The reason Knox was successful was due to the Protestant nobility. Without them there would have been no Reformation . The reason the nobility were so keen on the Reformation was because they had spent most of the previous 50 years grabbing the lands of the church by a variety of means from simple entryism to outright terrorism. The poor abbot of Crossraguel Abbey, for example, was kidnapped by the Earl of Cassillis and slowly roasted on a spit for a week until he handed over the charters of the abbey’s lands.

To legitimise this theft, the same nobility then met on June 17, 1617, to pass the Act of Registration which set up the Register of Sasines to record these dubious titles. Then, for good measure, they passed the Act of Prescription which legitimised this theft if held for 40 years. These acts remain in force .

SCOTLAND , ENGLANDS FIRST AND LAST COLONY.

Of course, as a country, we have something of a track record in stealing land. Arguably, the biggest land grab of them all was the British Empire.  In 1768, Captain Cook was granted a royal warrant which instructed him to take possession of “such islands as you may discover in the course of your voyage that have not hitherto been discovered by Europeans”. The colonisation of Australia in 1788 gave rise to the legal doctrine of terra nullius – literally “land belonging to no-one”. For more than two centuries this legal fiction underpinned the Australian land law code until a native of the Meriam Islands, Eddie Mabo, successfully challenged it in the High Court of Australia in 1992. As a consequence, Australian land law is in something of a state of flux.

Terra nullius is also the doctrine that underlies the strange Scots legal notion of a non domino titles – those granted by someone who is not the owner of the land they are granting. Again, these have been used to generate all sorts of mischief but continue to be recognised as a legitimate part of the Scots law of property.

Within legal circles there have lively debates about how the laws of prescription have been used and abused. Indeed, in the latest Scottish Law Commission report it is admitted that there are those who argue that “prescription is theft”. However, until now, these controversies have not formed part of the debate on land reform, which is curious. . Certainly when we have MSPs who have played the property market and at least one MSP who owns seven houses, it looks unlikely that they are going to be sympathetic to the need for land prices, and thus house prices, to drop to affordable levels.

BUT DIRECT DEMOCRACY WOULD SOLVE THIS SITUATION TODAY!!

Land is power.  It is at the root of growing inequality in Britain, at the heart of the financial mess we are in, and at the heart of the ‘fairness agenda’ promoted by David Cameron and Nick Clegg.David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill served together in government as social reformers more than 100 years ago. One of their shared causes was land reform. We need more of the kind of radical, progressive and determined thinking that they espoused if we are to build a truly fair and just society. The division of land and the iniquities of the Scots law of property stand in the way of this.

In 1872, Cosmo Innes, the famous antiquarian, advocate, and law professor, wrote: “Looking over our country, the land held in common was of vast extent. In truth, the arable – the cultivated land of Scotland, the land early appropriated and held by charter – is a narrow strip on the river bank or beside the sea. The inland, the upland, the moor, the mountain were really not occupied at all for agricultural purposes, or served only to keep the poor and their cattle from starving. They were not thought of when charters were made and lands feudalised. Now as cultivation increased, the tendency in the agricultural mind was to occupy these wide commons, and our lawyers lent themselves to appropriate the poor man’s grazing to the neighbouring baron. and the lord[who] had never possessed any of the common, when it came to be divided, the lord got the whole that was allocated to the estate, and the poor cottar none. The poor had no lawyers.”

Not only did the poor have no lawyers. They spoke no Latin either and were not in the habit of travelling to Edinburgh on a regular basis to examine the title deeds of the nobility.

But if it is possible, as Eddie Mabo demonstrated, to turn the tables on 200 years of colonial legal fiction in Australia, it should not be beyond our wit to do the same here. It is time to reclaim the law of the land from those who have both framed it and benefited from it over the centuries, to repeal the law of prescription and to pass a land restitution act to recover all stolen land. Above all, let’s remember that landowners might own the land but they do not (or should not) own land law. That belongs to us and it’s high time we paid more attention to what’s been going on in our name.

“LABOUR ministers were warned in a secret Whitehall dossier 30 years ago of the powerful case for Scotland becoming independent with booming oil revenues, but the information was kept confidential by Harold Wilson’s government to keep nationalism at bay.

The dossier, most of which was written by a leading government economist in 1974 and 1975, sets out how Scotland would have had one of the strongest currencies in Europe, attracting international capital into its banks in the same way as Switzerland.

It argued Scotland could quickly become one of Europe’s strongest economies with “embarrassingly” large tax surpluses.”

The Scottish economy could enjoy record growth if Scotland became independent, leaving the average Scot many thousands of pounds better off each year. This is the finding of a research Briefing Paper published today by the Adam Smith Institute, the free market economic think tank.”

While the rest of the country hunkers down for the Chancellor’s Spending Review on Wednesday and the most brutal spending cuts since the 1920s, Salmond will hold out a glimmer of hope.

Instead of passively accepting the predations of the Treasury, he will proffer independence as the best – indeed, the only – defence against the looming cuts from Westminster.

In her speech to the conference yesterday, Nicola Sturgeon prepared the ground for the boss.

“Now more than ever before, Scotland needs the power of independence. “Being able to take action that is right for Scotland, action that will grow our economy faster and raise more revenue, is the only alternative to years of savage spending cuts that will eat away at the very fabric of our society. That will be the central issue at the heart of this election campaign.”

Salmond will expand on the theme when he speaks today, saying only the SNP has the credibility and experience to see Scotland through tough times.

“Either Scotland stays in the Westminster straitjacket of low growth, public sector cutbacks and blighted futures, or we take responsibility and change our circumstances for the better.”

But it’s more complicated than that. First, it is about the economy. True, SNP have touted independence in good economic times and bad, but in the current crisis the Nationalist leadership thinks it may have found the perfect storm.

In the first ten years of devolution, Scotland’s budget rose by an average of 5% above inflation each year.

Now, the gears are about to be thrown into a crunching reverse, with expanding budgets replaced by deep cuts.

Yet the public still seems to be sleepwalking towards the pain.

One recent survey said most people thought the cuts had already gone far enough, when they haven’t even started.

Salmond believes that when people do wake up, they will be furious, and the fact the cuts are being imposed by a Tory-led government in London will only compound their anger.

They’ll also be in search of a get-out clause, and the First Minister will present independence as just that – instead of suffering cuts Scotland could grow its way of the pain by boosting its economy with power over its own destiny.

While Labour’s Iain Gray is left arguing for tweaking Holyrood’s powers through the Calman Commission, Salmond will be able to paint a bolder, more inspiring picture, of an independent nation free of Westminster control.

Although the SNP has made similar pitches before, the coming cuts will concentrate minds on Scotland’s future as never before, he believes.

But, ever the gambler, Salmond is betting that after the shocks of the economic collapse and frenzied cuts, Scots are finally ready for an experiment in alternative living.

The parents of Linda Norgrove are waiting to be told how the kidnapped Scottish aid worker died when US special forces stormed a mud-walled compound in eastern Afghanistan.

According to conflicting reports her captors either threw a grenade into the room where the 36-year-old was being held, or detonated a suicide vest.

The unsuccessful rescue mission came three weeks after Norgrove was seized by insurgents in the mountainous province of Kunar, near the Pakistan border, on her way to view an irrigation project she had overseen.

Speaking at a press conference today, Cameron said that General David Petraeus, the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan, had contacted his office this morning to say a review of the rescue operation had revealed she “may not have died at the hands of her captors” as originally thought.
It had initially been reported that Norgrove died from a grenade explosion, but subsequent reports suggested her rebel captors detonated a bomb vest as American troops attempted to rescue her.

It was agreed that US, rather than British, special forces, should be involved because the Americans knew the area better.
Asked whether there was any suggestion US forces were reckless, the prime minister said: “We must get to the bottom of what happened; we only have sketchy information.” Petraeus “deeply regrets what happened, as do I”, Cameron said.

Afghan tribal leaders spent 12 days negotiating for the release of Linda Norgrove, covering 150 miles on foot as they criss-crossed the mountains of Kunar seeking to intercede with her captors, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt.
Local leaders were convinced they could free the Scottish aid worker, aged 36, after negotiating the release of several Afghan prisoners in the area in the preceding year.
The gang holding her had reached the point where it was ready to free Miss Norgrove, they claim, but they say hopes of a peaceful resolution were thwarted.
They blame Nato’s refusal to assist them, and to call off the special forces search operation which led to the bungled rescue in which she died.
“Some days after Linda was killed the Americans came to talk to us. I told them it was their fault she was dead,” said Haji Kamil, the 39-year-old leader of the delegation,

How the official story of Linda Norgrove’s death unravelled

International aid workers in Afghanistan had been increasingly concerned about their safety and the murders of a group of doctors in the north of the country, including the British doctor Karen Woo two months ago, have added to the sense of foreboding. However, the fact that Ms Norgrove had not been immediately executed was seen as a source of hope that she would, at some stage, be freed. Well versed in Afghan culture, and a fluent speaker of Dari who was also learning Pashto, she was regarded by colleagues as more capable of surviving than most.

That is how matters remained until the news, at the weekend, that Ms Norgrove was killed during an attempt to rescue her by American special forces, supposedly blown up by one of her captors wearing a suicide vest.

US and British authorities stated that they had no choice but to mount the military operation as the hostage was about to be taken across the border to be delivered to al-Qa’ida in Pakistan. But that account disintegrated yesterday with David Cameron having to announce that Ms Norgrove may have been killed by US troops throwing a grenade.Ms Norgrove, who worked for an American development agency, was travelling with Afghan companions in Kunar to visit an irrigation project on 26 September when they were stopped by armed men in the uniform of the Afghan army and taken away. Her bodyguards chased after the men and there was a brief fire fight, but they failed to secure her release.

There are directly contradictory accounts of what, in the meantime, was going on behind the scenes. The Foreign Secretary William Hague said yesterday that “from the start” the British government was gravely concerned that Ms Norgrove had been taken by a vicious Salafist group who would pass her on up the terrorist chain of command. But Afghan officials claimed that they were in the process of obtaining her release through a group of local elders when the raid took place. Others maintained that the abductors were not hardcore Taliban but a criminal gang which was seeking a substantial ransom and had let this be known to British diplomats.

1.local negotiators were certain they could gain her release through negotiations and the payment of ransom (as they had done in other situations), but the Americans rushed the ‘rescue’ on the bogus excuse, with no evidence whatsoever and in the face of established local practice, that she was about to be smuggled to Pakistan where she would be killed by ‘al Qaeda’;
2.the grenade thrown in a hostage ‘rescue’ by ‘crack’ American special forces;
3.the elaborate lies piled on to describe the evil Taliban and how they slaughtered this poor defenseless aid worker;
4.the fact that the Taliban denied being involved, and were even being paid protection money to lay off the aid workers;
5.the control of the area by warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, associated with drug smuggling and the CIA, whose people would be by far the most likely to be in a position to grab anyone in the area.
I know this was murder. By Americans. Probably to protect CIA drug smuggling operations.

* A chaotic police rescue, which ended in the deaths of eight people taken hostage on a bus in the Philippines, was watched live by millions on television in August. Seven more people were injured. The former police inspector Rolando Mendoza, 55, who was dismissed on robbery and extortion charges, had seized the bus in Manila.
* Florent Lemacon was killed in a shoot-out between French special forces and Somali pirates in April last year after a controversial attempt to recover his hijacked yacht in the Indian Ocean.
* A Russian operation to rescue 800 people taken hostage in a Moscow theatre by Chechen rebels in October 2002 led to the death of 117 as well as around 50 rebels. Most of those killed were said to have been poisoned by gas pumped into the building by Russian troops.
* Attempts by UK and US special forces to rescue IT consultant Peter Moore and his four security guards failed to reach them in time. The five men were kidnapped in Baghdad in May 2007. Mr Moore, 36, was eventually released but three of the guards – Jason Swindlehurst, 38, Jason Creswell, 39, and Alec MacLachlan, 30 – were shot dead. It is believed the fourth, Alan McMenemy, 34, met the same fate.

We could also ,through a proportional representative government system, be able to whither away the state if we feel its not worth the money! I call this the “anarchist vote”. Every election we should have the option on the voting slip of “empty seat”. That way if 10% of the population want NO polition , we keep 10% of the parliment seats empty! Thus saving wages and expenses etc.It would also mean that it would take more politions to agree to be able to pass a law.
EXAMPLE
If we had a parliment of a 100 mps and 10% of the people voted for an empty seat. Then only 90 mps would be seated in parliment.BUT it would still take 51 of them to pass a law.
After a while if it became obvious that parliment spent most of its time passing pointless laws for thier own benefit and not our benefit.It would be a natural process of voting them out of existance. If 50% of the people voted for an empty seat ,the remaining mps could not pass a law!! BUT the mps could still administrate the nation and put laws forward to see if they gathered enough public interest. Then it would be up to the people to petition amoungst themselves if they think any new laws are needed and then a referendum on whether we accept them.

House prices fell 3.6% last month
The UK housing market has suffered a major jolt as figures from Halifax revealed prices slumped 3.6% in September – the biggest monthly drop since figures were first compiled in 1983.

But the figures sent shockwaves through the industry. Shares in housebuilders, such as Barratt Developments, Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey, and lenders including Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland, were all down after the figures were released.
Paul Diggle, property expert at Capital Economics, said: “The hefty drop in the Halifax measure of house prices adds weight to the view that house price weakness is far from over.”
While industry reports have been mixed, he said the Halifax result “adds weight to the argument that we are on the cusp of a more sustained downturn in house prices”.
Tim Hammond, chief executive of property search firm The Buying Agents, said: “There will be a lot of buyers out there who will see this as the window of opportunity they have been waiting for. For some time there has been a stand-off between sellers and buyers, with vendors reluctant to drop their prices and properties languishing on the market for months at unrealistic prices.”
But the Government spending review, together with renewed signs of a lending squeeze amid cash-strapped banks, casts a dark cloud over the outlook for property prices.

As proceedings begin against Iceland’s former Prime Minister, Geir Haarde, for the banking crisis of 2008, at least two thousand Icelanders took to the streets in two days of protest this weekend.  Iceland joins over a dozen other nations protesting economic measures taken out on the public while banks and large corporations receive bailouts. Class war is on, and it’s gone global.
Mass protests were also held in Greece, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, Germany, Italy, France, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Serbia, Romania, Poland, and the U.S., according to reports from several sources. Folks around the world reject corrupt banking practices and bailouts, while social services are cut and tens of millions have been forced into joblessness and homelessness.

Dori Sigurdsson, an Icelandic blogger, reports that when Parliament returned from recess on October 1st, they were met by a loud, angry crowd who tossed eggs, bread, dairy products and keys at them. People slept outside the Parliament building the night before its return session. He’s posted videos and several images.
Dori notes, “because of the lack of help from the Goverment for the public, many are now losing their houses and cars.” In a nation of only 317,000, 12 percent (or 40,000) have lost or are about to lose their homes, he says. Icelanders condemn the injustice of large companies and their CEOs having had their debts forgiven by government, while theirs are not.
Three other officials were charged with “misconduct in the lead up to, during and following the banking crisis,” reports Ice News. Parliament voted to prosecute only Haarde for negligence, under a 100-year-old law that has never before been used.
Icelanders are also angry that only the former PM is being charged. One commenter on the Ice News article noted, “Is this not a total betrayal of the people?”  And criminal, to reasonable minds.

The Guardian notes widespread protest across Europe “amid growing fury at austerity measures being imposed… Disruption in more than a dozen countries this week included a national strike in Spain and a cement truck driven into the Irish parliament’s gates.”  Press TV also reported on protests planned in several nations last week. Even in the US, thousands recently protested in Washington, D.C. for jobs instead of wars.ANSWER Coalition’s Brian Becker told reporters that the US spends a billion dollars every two days for its military invasions. That’s much lower than the trillion dollars a year that Robert Higgs of the Independent Institute calculates. We do know that Congress spends 58 percent of its discretionary budget on the military.

Many economists note that unemployment in the US is two to three times higher than what the Labor Dept. reports. In July, economists put the number at 28 percent, compared to the 9.5 percent rate reported by the feds. For September, the Christian Science Monitor showed unemployment at 16.7 percent, while the feds reported 9.6 percent.
In the US where 95% of the public rejected both Wall Street bailouts (under Bush and under Obama), we learned that banksters then rewarded themselves with million dollar bonuses. The boldness of their depravity is sure to have its rebound effect. Is it time to terminate this government, too?

Shattered glass and injuries at Iceland parliament protests
Over 30 windows were broken during protests at the Icelandic parliament building, the Althingi, last night. Three police officers and one protester were also injured.
The 8,000-strong protesters also showered the building in paint and food colouring and one window was smashed at the neighbouring Domkirkjan .
Police and protesters never clashed directly and the crowds were held back effectively by fences erected earlier in the day. A large bonfire was lit in the middle of Austurvollur Square (outside parliament) and police described the vast majority of the protesters as peaceful. Nobody was arrested despite the high level of vandalism.
Several MPs’ cars were pelted as they drove away after the meeting of parliament ended around midnight; none more so than the Minister of Finance’s car.
The protesters were protesting various things; but mostly the perceived lack of promised government help to indebted householders. Many were also there to call for new elections.

Ecuador: A third US sponsored coup d’etat against a member state of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA)

UPDATE: 4:30pm, Police forces involved in coup in Ecuador against President Rafael Correa are violently repressing the people in the streets of Quito attempting to rescue President Correa, who remains sequestered by coup forces. Governments throughout Latin America have condemned the coup in Ecuador, but the US State Department merely said Washington was “monitoring the situation in Ecuador”.

A third coup d’etat is underway against a nation member of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA), a Latin American bloc of nations that opposes US hegemony in the region and has created new mechanisms for trade and integration based on principles of solidarity and independence from imperial powers.

In 2002, a coup d’etat by opposition forces backed by Washington briefly ousted Hugo Chavez from power in Venezuela. The coup was defeated by the people of Venezuela during a popular uprising rejecting the attempt to destroy democracy. Chavez returned to power two days later. Since then, Venezuela has suffered numerous destabilization attempts, economic sabotages, psychological warfare – both nationally and internationally – electoral intervention, assassination attempts against President Chavez, and a vicious international campaign to portray Venezuela as a dictatorship. This past weekend, opposition forces, funded and supported by US agencies, regained key seats in the nation’s legislature; a platform from where they can intensify their efforts to provoke regime change.

In June 2009, Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was overthrown in a coup d’etat backed by the Obama Administration and promoted by military and right wing forces in Honduras. Since then, Honduras has never recovered its democracy. Zelaya remains in exile.

Now, Ecuador is victim of a coup against President Rafael Correa, an outspoken, solid revolutionary who ousted the US military base from his nation last year and has taken a firm stance against the US capitalist economic model imposed in his nation years ago. Security forces have risen up against his government, backed by political organizations funded by USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy.

An emergency meeting has been convened by ALBA and UNASUR nations in Argentina late Thursday night. President Correa’s life was in danger Thursday, as he remained sequestered by coup forces.

Another coup against ALBA attempts to impede Latin American liberation and integration, but the people remain defiant, with dignity.

Coup Attempt in Ecuador 2pm EST

Several US-funded organizations have made calls to demand Correa’s resignation. The police forces behind the coup are maintaining President Rafael Correa sequestered in a military hospital. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez warned minutes ago that Correa’s life is in “severe danger”. Chávez also criticized the US State Department’s failure to condemn the coup underway in Ecuador this afternoon during their daily press briefing. State spokesman Phillip Crowley said the US is “monitoring the situation” in Ecuador, but failed to condemn the developments.

There is mass police repression in Quito against pro-Correa forces in the street. Telesur news team was detained by coup forces and prevented from broadcasting earlier this afternoon.

President Chávez left this afternoon for an emergency UNASUR meeting in Argentina. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Bolivian President Evo Morales and Peruvian President Alan Garcia have confirmed their presence.

 A coup attempt is underway against the government of President Rafael Correa. On Thursday morning, groups of police forces rebelled and took over key strategic sites in Quito, Ecuador’s capital. President Correa immediately went to the military base occupied by the police leading the protest to work out a solution to the situation. The police protesting claimed a new law passed on Wednesday regarding public officials would reduce their benefits.

Nonetheless, President Correa affirmed that his government has actually doubled police wages over the past four years. The law would not cut benefits but rather restructure them. The law was used as an excuse to justify the police protest. But other forces are behind the chaos, attempting to provoke a coup led by former president Lucio Guitierrez, who was impeached by popular revolt in Ecuador in 2005. “This is a coup attempt led by Lucio Guitierrez”, denounced Correa on Thursday afternoon via telephone. Correa was attacked by the police forces with tear gas. “Kill me if you need to. There will be other Correa’s”,said the President, addressing the police rebellion. He was hospitalized shortly after at a military hospital, which has now been taking over by coup forces.

As of 1pm Thursday, police forces were attempting to access his hospital room to possibly assassinate him.

Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño called on supporters to go to the hospital to defend Correa and prevent his assassination. Military forces took over an air base in Quito to prevent air transit and took over nearby streets to prevent Correa’s supporters from mobilizing towards the hospital. Other security forces took over the parliament, preventing legislators from accessing the state institution and causing severe chaos and violence. Thousands of supporters filled Quito’s streets, gathering around the presidential palace, backing Correa and rejecting the coup attempt. At 2pm EST, the Ecuadorian government declared an emergency state. Countries throughout the region expressed support for Correa and condemned the destabilization.

The Organization of American States in Washington called an emergency meeting at 2:30pm EST. ALBA nations and UNASUR are also convening.

Ecuador is a member of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA) and a close ally of Venezuela. Last June, Honduras, a prior ALBA member, was victim of a coup d’etat that forced President Manuel Zelaya from power. The coup was backed by Washington. In 2002, Venezuela was also subject to a Washington-backed coup d’etat that briefly ousted President Chavez from power. He was returned to office within 48 hours after millions of Venezuelans protested and defeated the US-backed coup leaders.

Ecuador is the newest victim of destabilization in South America. USAID channels millions annually into political groups against Correa that could be behind the coup attempt.

Buenos Aires: President of Ecuador Rafael Correa remains in hospital after a tear gas attack during his speech to police, protesting against austerity cuts, regional and international media reported on Friday.

Police in the Latin American state, which has seen three presidents ousted in the past 13 years, took to the streets on Thursday a day after parliament passed a controversial bill to delay automatic promotions and ending bonuses and other benefits. The law is yet to officially enter force as it was not published by the state media.

One person was killed and dozens injured during the riots, Interior Minister Miguel Carvajal told on the CRE TV channel. Unconfirmed reports put the number of injured at about 50.

The turmoil in the politically turbulent state comes amid financial problems the country. The government defaulted more than $3.2 billion in international debt since 2008. LEGALLY

In November 2008, Ecuador became the first country to undertake an examination of the legitimacy and structure of its foreign debt. An independent debt audit commissioned by the government of Ecuador documented hundreds of allegations of irregularity, illegality, and illegitimacy in contracts of debt to predatory international lenders. The loans, according to the report, violated Ecuador’s domestic laws, US Securities and Exchange Commission regulations, and general principles of international law. Ecuador’s use of legitimacy as a legal argument for defaulting set a major precedent; indeed, the formation of a debt auditing commission sets a precedent.

Bankers jailed, sued as Iceland seeks culprits for crisis
Since Iceland’s three largest banks — Kaupthing, Landsbanki and Glitnir — collapsed in late 2008, their former executives and owners have largely been living untroubled lives abroad.
But the publication last month of a parliamentary inquiry into the island nation’s profound financial and economic crisis signaled a turning of the tide, laying much of the blame for the downfall on the former bank heads who had taken “inappropriate loans from the banks” they worked for.
On Wednesday, the administrators of Glitnir’s liquidation announced they had filed a two-billion-dollar (1.6-billion-euro) lawsuit in a New York court against former large shareholders and executives for alleged fraud.

“This is a coup d’etat attempt by opposition forces. They resorted to [violence] because they will not win the elections. I call on the citizens to stay calm,” the president told the national radio in a phone interview.

Correa, the first Ecuadorean president to win two terms in a row, said he had been taken to hospital after “a tear gas grenade blew up right next to my face” during his speech at a police barracks. Correa is unable to leave the building, which is surrounded by an angry crowd, chanting “Long live civil war!”

“It seems that the hospital is under siege,” Correa said, adding that the uprising was “a conspiracy planned long ago.”

The president said he was set to leave the ward “as soon as possible” and will not negotiate with protestors unless the violence comes to a halt.

“I will leave it [the hospital] as president, or they will have to carry my corpse out of here,” he added.

The government subsequently declared a weeklong state of siege. Flights from the Mariscal Sucre International Airport serving the capital Quito were suspended as it was seized by protestors, but resumed earlier on Friday. There are also reports of violence and looting in the capital and other cities.

According to local media reports, the government is how discussing the possibility of dismissing the National Assembly and announcing early presidential and parliamentary elections. The decision, if made, is to be approved by the country’s constitutional court.

The country’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, called on the citizens to “walk peacefully to the hospital, where the president is blocked by police officers.” The crowd of Correa’s supporters, who marched towards the hospital, was teargased by protestors.

“This is not Honduras. Correa is president,” the supporters chanted, walking through the smoke, Reuters reported.

Protestors also broke into the building of the local ECTV TV channel in an attempt to cut signal.

The CRE TV channel reported that servicemen of the Ecuadorean air force have seized hangars where the presidential plane and helicopter are being kept, seeking to prevent the president from leaving the country.

Coup d’état continues in Ecuador

Chaos broke out in Ecuador when members of the nation’s military and national police forces turned to violence to protest a new law that reduces their pay and benefits.

The coup d’état has not ended and it has not failed, argued author and lawyer Eva Golinger, who is in Caracas, Venezuela. The coup d’état is ongoing, she said.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said he was attacked by police with tear gas. He has been hospitalized due to injuries.

“President Correa in Ecuador has been sequestered by police and military forces. He is in a military hospital where he was taken after he was attacked by the police forces, but he’s now being detained. He is not there anymore n his own will,” said Golinger.

She explained that members of Correa’s government and his supports have attempted to gain access to the President, but the military is denying them access.

Meanwhile, opposition groups have spoken out in favor of the Coup d’état and are calling for Correa’s resignation.

“The law that apparently the police were protesting seems to be just be an excuse for some plans that were already underway to execute a coup against Correa,” Golinger said.

In a telephone interview earlier in the day, Correa said there were forces working to assassinate him, but he insisted that even if he is killed his policies will continue in his absence.

Correa’s government and policies have been in conflict with the United States for years, including his rejection of a US based that had been located in the country. Today the US still maintains a presence through the US Agency for International Development and the National Endowment for Democracy.

”Some of the groups coming out calling for the president’s resignation are known as groups receiving funding from these US agencies. So, again there is an indications already in just the beginning moments of this coup that’s underway of backing from different US agencies,” said Golinger.

Coup attempts in Latin America in recent years took place in nations that are or were members of the Bolivarian Alliance, which works to oppose US hegemony in the region.

“It seems to be that this is an attempt to deter Latin American integration and independence,” said Golinger.

It has been reported that Correa said there was an attempt on his life.

“That’s not exactly what he said,” said Upéry. “He went to talk to the policemen in one of their camps and there he said, ‘well if you want to kill me, kill me’. The fact is they didn’t kill him.”

But, when the president left some policemen used a noxious gas which did impact him.

“If they wanted to kill him, they could have killed him very easily,” said Upéry.

He explained that he is still not sure what the policemen want, their only demands have been that the law be changed to return the benefits they feel they have lost.

The national army has however issued a declaration in support of Correa and issued a state of emergency, placing them in charge.

The people of Ecuador have come out in strong support for the president. The people want the police to stop and the president to be released, even though some do understand the concerns of the police force, said Upéry.

Kanellos[1] (Greek: Κανέλλος) (meaning “cinnamon”) is a stray dog that resides in Athens, Greece. Greek photographers capturing riot footage started to notice the dog when he kept appearing in their negatives.

I have to say I do like this story. I remember staying in Athens in the early 90′s ,feeding the stray dogs and sleeping in the Acropolis. The Greek anarchists always kept dogs as the local police (usually recruited from the mountains) seemed scared stiff of dogs. 

I remember Scotland in the 80′s and the anti-poll tax demonstartions. There we used to organise that everybody should be walking thier dog on a certain street at a certain time. We always seemed to be thier when the baliffs arrived and the baliffs did seem to wind up the dogs .

The legendary Kanellos passed away about 2 years ago. His name means Cinnamon. He lived a long and free life. He must have been about 17 when he died. He was always there to stand next to the students, the protesters and the people hanging around the central area of Athens, especially at Exarcheia. In his last 12 years he moved into the Polytechneio premises, the Technical University of Athens which is in the Exarcheia area. He became a frequenter, more frequent than many students and started to hang around the corridors, the classes and students councils becoming more of a friend than a mascot. When the Dean of the Architecture department called the dog catcher the people rised. A petition and even a demostration was held, in demand of Kanellos release. Finally they let him go but he was already worned out by arthritis and old age and had trouble walking. The students gathered money and bought him a wheelchair for dogs. One student took him in so he could take care of him in his last days. Kanellos finally passed away on the 2nd of july 2008 and returned again into Polytechneio where he was buried accompanied by many of his friends.

Rebel Dog is just one of the new generation of political strays. You can find strays attending demostrations in many cities of Greece, such as Thessaloniki. All the dogs would like to be like Kanellos, free, happy and restless

Having found myself in a riot over the weekend ,with bricks flying and cars burning and the smell of tear gas in the air, I had the feeling this was NOT going to be the last time we see this happening.
The average Joe in the street really has had enough and is now so pissed off they are willing to face well equiped riot police.
Who started what and when I cannot say BUT I did notice a whole squad ,and I mean SQUAD ,of FAKE ANARCHISTS(undercover police) falling back to police lines when the riot really got going, all dressed with the same black hoodies and masks and the same boots and jeans.I suspect these where the people that started throwing bottles at the police BUT never seemed to actually hit any of them. BUT gave the police the excuse to horse and batton charge the protestors, ….after that all hell broke loose

What I saw at this demonstration was POLICE PROVOCATION and PRE-MEDITATED VIOLENCE.!! The protestors had walked throught the city without incident. People had brought THIER CHILDREN to the demo NOT WEAPONS!! The police brought the weapons ,clubs, horses ,gas. The demo was just finishing ,there had been a STREET DISCO going on and a symbolic house squatting took place. Th demonstrators where now TRYING TO LEAVE THE AREA ! The demostrators had put on “vegetarian wraps” for the demonstrators ,just up the road a few 100 metres. THE RIOT POLICE BLOCKED THIER EXIT ,KETTELING THEY CALL IT, AND HORSE CHARGED THE BACK OF THE DEMO, CHILDREN, PREGANT WOMEN ,EVERYBODY,BEATEN WITH CLUBS!!!!!!
