Video of thousands clashing with police in Croatia, dozens injured
Croatian police clashed with approximately 15-thousand anti-government protesters who rallied in the capital on Saturday, and state television reported that officers used tear gas to disperse the group. At least 25 people were injured. Dozens of mostly young demonstrators charged at a police cordon preventing them from reaching a central square in Zagreb where the government headquarters is located, Croatian television reported. The protesters threw stones and bricks at police, who responded with tear gas, the report said, adding that several people were injured and nearby windows were broken. Croatian broadcaster, RTL, also showed riot police striking anti-government protesters with their batons. Police set up metal fences to corral the crowd, the report added, describing the situation as “chaos.” Croatian police said they detained 60 protesters and that 12 police and 13 citizens were injured.

Police block violent protesters as students rally in Rome
Police vans and lines of officers in riot gear blocked access to much of Rome’s historic centre on Tuesday to keep thousands of student protesters from reaching parliament. The police blockades prevented several lines of marchers from converging on the square outside the Chamber of Deputies and blocked bus and tram routes. Riot police eventually followed closely behind the protesters on Via del Corso street causing the most violent group to disperse. Lawmakers in Italy on Tuesday will vote on a contested reform bill which many students and professors say will give the private sector too much involvement in the state university system. They claim funding cuts mean faculty positions are going unfilled.

BAGHDAD – Tens of thousands of Iraqis surged into the streets Friday in at least a dozen demonstrations across the country, storming provincial buildings, forcing local officials to resign, freeing prisoners and otherwise demanding more from a government they only recently had a chance to elect.
At least 23 protesters were killed as Iraqis braved security forces to vent shared frustrations at the nearest government official. Sunnis, Shiites, Kurds and Christians, they shouted for simple dignities made more urgent by war – adequate electricity, clean water, a decent hospital, a fair shot at a job.

‘When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.’ Thomas Jefferson

SOME INSPIRATION FOR THOSE OF SCOTTISH ANCESTORY…AND EVERYONE ELSE
September 11th, 1297 was the day that Wallace rallied his men to face English forces at Stirling Bridge. In the film Braveheart, this battle is depicted in a scene where Wallace delivers his famous “Freedom Speech.”
“I am William Wallace.
And I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny!
You have come to fight as free men. And free man you are!
What will you do without freedom? Will you fight?
Fight and you may die.
Run and you will live—at least awhile.
And dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance, to come back here as young men and tell our enemies that they may take our lives but they will never take our freedom!”
“All government, of course, is against liberty. The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. Most people want security in this world, not liberty.”
“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out… without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable. It doesn’t take a majority to make a rebellion; it takes only a few determined leaders and a sound cause.”
“Whether the mask is labeled Fascism, Democracy, or Dictatorship or the Proletariat, our great adversary remains the Apparatus-the bureaucracy, the police, the military…. No matter what the circumstances, the worst betrayal will always be to subordinate ourselves to this Apparatus, and to trample underfoot, in its service, all human values in ourselves and in others.”– The French worker philosopher Simone Weil,1945
