As proceedings begin against Iceland’s former Prime Minister, Geir Haarde, for the banking crisis of 2008, at least two thousand Icelanders took to the streets in two days of protest this weekend. Iceland joins over a dozen other nations protesting economic measures taken out on the public while banks and large corporations receive bailouts. Class war is on, and it’s gone global.

In just three years, Iceland went from collapse to revolution and back to growth. What can Spain and Greece learn from the Icelandic experience and its embrace of direct democracy?
Just two or three years after its economy and government collapsed, Iceland is bouncing back with remarkable strength. This week, the small island nation earned praise from foreign investors despite allowing its banks to collapse and refusing to pay back some of its debt — belying the dominant idea among Europe’s ruling class that bank failures and defaults necessarily engender disastrous economic consequences.
Now, in an historically unprecedented move, the government has decided to draft a new constitution with the online input of its citizens — essentially crowdsourcing the creation of Iceland’s real democracy. Rather than just involving voters at the end of the process through a referendum, the Icelanders have an opportunity, through social media, to be directly involved in the writing process. It’s the ultimate affirmation of participatory democracy. It’s Democracy 2.0.
How did Iceland get from there to here? And what are the lessons for Europe’s troubled periphery?
Quietly, as the world was busy watching the inauguration of President Obama, the people of Iceland overthrew their government and demanded a referendum on the country’s debt.

Iceland’s constitutional revolution
The Council has been working on the new constitution for two months and has been attracting some positive attention due to the openness and inclusiveness of its workings, and its use of new media to include the general public.
Here is a short history of the project, including details of the work of the Constitutional Committee and the National Forum 2010 (a 1000-strong public consultation), which laid the groundwork for the Constitutional Council. See in particular the final section, “The public’s participation in the work process”, it’s impressive. Here is the chairwoman of the Constitutional Committee discussing the process in April, when the Council had just begun its work, and here is the Facebook page on which people can leave their comments and suggestions both on the process and the content of the new constitution itself.
It’s a pioneering experiment that must be admired. It may form the blueprint for future projects in other nations. This kind of national participation is certainly facilitated by Iceland’s small population (about 300,000), but that only serves to demonstrate the merits of devolving power to regional or local levels, so that even in much more populous countries these kinds of experiments can be tried on smaller test groups. Besides, social media make the world seem very small and manageable. Direct democracy isn’t just for Iceland.

In the referendum, the Icelanders decided not to repay foreign creditors — Great Britain and the Netherlands — who had so foolishly deposited their savings in one of the world’s most over-leveraged banks, Icesave. The outcome of the vote (93 percent against repayment) was a watershed in the epic battle between people power and foreign financial interests.

Yet what’s really interesting about the Icelandic case is not just the referendum, but the fact that the consequences of the outcome were far from being as disastrous as Europe’s self-proclaimed economic ‘experts’ had predicted. In fact, within just two years of the collapse of its government, Iceland is bouncing back rapidly, and is actually being rewarded for it by foreign investors. As the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday:
Iceland’s first international bond offering since its spectacular economic and banking collapse late in 2008 has been snapped up by investors. The five-year $1 billion deal, yielding just under 5%, is a milestone in rebuilding confidence internationally and follows a turnaround in the economy, forecast to grow 2.25% this year.

So it’s no surprise that Iceland became a rallying point for the ‘indignados‘ in Spain during the mass protests that broke out there last month. Spanish demonstrators could be seen carrying placards reading “Iceland is my goal” and “I think of Iceland.” The Icelandic model has also come to inspire the indignant protest movement in Greece, which is rapidly picking up steam. So what are Iceland’s main lessons for Europe’s troubled periphery?
Instead of socializing the losses of the banks, making ordinary people pay for a crisis they never caused, the Icelandic model forced the bankers to pay for their own stupidity. During the Icelandic crisis, all three of the country’s largest banks collapsed. The government didn’t save them.
Secondly, Iceland actually went after those responsible — both to enact justice and to set a precedent that this type of reckless speculation on the livelihoods of real people will simply not be tolerated in the future. Key figures in the banking sector have been arrested and a former prime minister has been formally charged.

Thirdly, Iceland did what no one is supposed to be doing according to neoliberal dogma: just like Malaysia did — to the dismay of the IMF — during the East-Asian crisis of 1997-’98, the Icelandic government instituted capital controls to stem the outflow of hot money from the country in the wake of its banking collapse. The EU should have done the same!
As a result, the Icelandic people are now slowly but surely beginning to recover from the worst ever economic collapse of any country during peacetime. By contrast, countries like Greece, Spain, Ireland and Portugal are still struggling — and likely to remain mired in deep recession, if not outright depression, for years to come.
Untold suffering and hardship will fall on millions of people as the ECB, IMF and Germany continue to expect full repayment while imposing draconian (and ultimately counterproductive) austerity measures. A lost generation will flee these countries in a desperate search for opportunity. Countless lives, businesses, families and dreams will be destroyed. And for what? A handful of bankers who refuse to take a haircut?
What Iceland teaches us is that it need not be that way. The Atlantic currents and Arab winds have already reached the European periphery. It’s just a matter of time before the first government on the continent will be toppled by its people. Democracy 2.0 is on its way. No one can stop it now.

Two thousand people arrested and all just to make a point. Courts working around the clock to make an example of anybody who dares challenge the status quo, no matter how chaotic and self-destructive such cries of rage are. History is littered with such spontaneous rebellions, all of which are symptoms of a much deeper malaise but clearly it’s a malaise that the political class do not want to confront, dare not confront, else they would be forced to deal with the conditions that they themselves have created.

It’s the same old ‘high Tory’ vindictive litany directed at the most vulnerable in our society, the forgotten and disenfranchised. There is not single expression of self-doubt as to how a very large section of society could feel so alienated, so desperate that they would destroy their own neighbourhoods. The class divide could not be plainer for all to see.
Public school ‘educated’ Cameron, a wealthy man from a wealthy family; privileged; a member of the elite. How can such a man have any comprehension of what thirty years of Thatcherism has done to vast swathes of our society? Over the past four decades entire communities destroyed with deindustrialisation followed by years of ‘benign neglect’ under both Tory and Labour rule.
How easily the glib phrases roll of the tongues of the elite. “Crime without punishment”? What is the cretin talking about? Our prisons are bursting at the seams with the casualties of capitalism, mostly illiterate, uneducated and unskilled and/or on drugs of some kind, they have been locked away, out of sight, out of mind by a vindictive and vicious society.

And who exactly has been “incentivising the worst aspects of human nature”? Why none other than David Cameron as his RAF jets drop bombs and missiles on innocent civilians. Are they not aware of just how big the chasm is between the fantasy of ‘humanitarian intervention’ and the reality of death being rained down on people and what effect such blatant, cold-blooded murder has on people? ‘Gang culture’. Code word for Black. And the BBC follows up its list of ’causes’ with yet another parade of ‘experts’, this time pontificating on the alleged role of Gangs in the disturbances, with an even more outrageous list of ‘reasons’.
To its credit, the BBC piece does much better with its list of No’s to the above, some of which at least inject a note of sanity into the affair, unlike the rabid nonsense I quoted above.
“In reality, there are few genuine gang members. And “all sorts of people” – teaching assistants, a graphic designer and university students – have been arrested for taking part in the looting.
“Paul Lewis, a Guardian journalist who spent five nights observing the violence, says it’s wrong to try to put the blame on one group. Everyone’s looking for a caricature yet those involved were a cross section of the local community. And each riot he saw from Hackney to Gloucester – had a distinctive character.
“”There were a great number of people swept along. The only generalisation that’s credible is that on the whole they were young and poor,” he says.””
But clearly the intention is to shift the focus onto Gangs as being the instigators of the looting and burning rather than a wider cross-section of the communities involved as it would imply that a lot more is ‘broken’ than those identified by Cameron and echoed faithfully by the media.

Note the blanket approach to ‘policing’. Entire areas deemed ‘no go’, to anyone I assume. Any unfortunate kid under the age of sixteen would be a target. But why under sixteen? Why not eighteen, why not ten? Why not all of us? Remember the infamous ASBO’s (Anti-Social Behaviour Orders) worn as a badge of honour by those who were awarded one. Proven totally ineffectual, all they did was alienate the youth even more from ‘authority’ by turning it into a contest between ‘us’ and ‘them’. Brilliant. British courts are coming down hard on the rioters who spread mayhem last week, but human rights groups say the severe penalties being handed down are an over-reaction and a cynical attempt to curry popularity.
Some offenders and their families are even being made homeless as their punishment, with local governments taking away their houses, but many say this will simply cause more harm than good.
“I think this is very unwise, the move to remove people from housing and to remove benefits,” Andrew Nielson says, “because actually, if we are saying that some of the crime that we saw on the streets was an expression of people not feeling part of society, not feeling part of our communities, then these measures are actually going to push these people further away from society, further away from our communities, and far more likely to commit crime.”
The Facebook case is the first sign of the government’s desire to crack down on social media. Websites like Twitter were applauded by the West for mobilizing the masses in the Arab world. But they were also instrumental in the UK riots, so now the prime minister wants it to stop.
“We are working with the police, the intelligence services and industry to look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality,” declared David Cameron.
When social media fuelled revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia, Britain called it democracy. But now the shoe is on the other foot when trouble is closer to home,
The Labour MP for Birmingham Selly Oak Steve McCabe says “I’m very conscious that it has been used in other areas to support what are seen as democratic movements and we’d be the first to complain if we thought the authorities in those countries were trying to block access to it.”
The Prime Minister says this is where Britain fights back. But it is feared that could just mean fighting fire with fire – and that would only fan the flames of civil disorder.

If only Ireland was a Democracy like Iceland ,they could vote on this issue and END IT ,probably with the arrests of guilty bankers and corrupt politions ,jusr like what happened in Iceland.
Unfortunately Ireland is an Elected Dictatorship just like the UK and is doomed to be sold as debtor slaves by thier criminal political dictators to pay for the debts of unprofitable and fraudulent bankers.
