Amnesty: U.S., Europe shielding Israel over Gaza war crimes
In its annual report, the rights group accuses Israel of continually violating human rights in Gaza with its ongoing economic siege.

Amnesty International complained in its annual report released Thursday that the U.S. and members of the European Union had obstructed international justice by using their positions on the UN Security Council to shield Israel from accountability for war crimes allegedly committed during last year’s Gaza war.
The rights group also accused Israel of continually violating human rights in the Gaza Strip. It cited Israel’s ongoing economic blockade as violating international law, leaving Gaza residents without adequate food or water supplies
“Israeli forces committed war crimes and other serious breaches of international law in the Gaza Strip during a 22-day military offensive codenamed Operation ‘Cast Lead’ that ended on 18 January (2009),” the rights group said.
“Among other things, they carried out indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks against civilians, targeted and killed medical staff, used Palestinian civilians as ‘human shields’, and indiscriminately fired white phosphorus over densely populated residential areas,” it added. “More than 1,380 Palestinians, including over 330 children and hundreds of other civilians, were killed.”
The Israeli government’s own Ministry of Foreign Affairs website shows that the Israeli government had already stopped Hamas rocket fire with a June 19, 2008 ceasefire. That ceasefire remained successful until Israel violated it with a lethal attack on Hamas members in Gaza on November 4, as more fully described in an article by the present author, “Israeli Government Contradicts its own Self-defense Claim.”

On April 5, 2010, the New York Times published an article by Isabel Kershner, “Israeli Rights Groups View Themselves as Under Siege,” which confirmed Levy’s account and demonstrated that Reut Institute concerns about delegitimization were well received at the highest level of the Israeli government. In her article, Kershner described the “increasingly hostile environment” in which various prominent Israeli human rights organizations are forced to operate. In addition, Kershner reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had identified “the delegitimization of Israel abroad” as “a major strategic threat.” Referring to international rights groups that have been critical of Israel, such as Human Rights Watch, Kershner quotes a senior Netanyahu aide saying that the Israeli government was “going to dedicate time and manpower to combating these groups.” Consistent with that statement, a newly proposed law within the Israeli Knesset would stifle the work of Israel-based human rights NGOs involved in efforts to prosecute Israeli officials for “breaches of International Humanitarian Law, or war crimes.”
The so-called “delegitimizers” stand on solid ground: the idea that Israel, or any country, has a “right to exist” contradicts long-held democratic values. For example, the US Constitution does not recognize any rights for the government, including the right to exist. Under the constitution government branches are granted or vested only with powers; rights are secured exclusively for the people, and these rights restrict the powers of the government. The constitution implements the idea articulated by Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 that people are endowed with inalienable rights, that governments are created to secure these rights, and that “governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed.” In furtherance of this view, the declaration provides that “when a long train of abuses, and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government and to provide new guards for their future security.”
SO there is NO RIGHT TO EXIST FOR ISRAEL !! There are rights to freedom of expression and speach and the right to live your life unharrassed BUT these apply to Jews and Arabs and everybody else!!!
Identifying Israel’s “Delegitimizers”
Consistent with traditional divide and rule strategy, the Reut report distinguishes between those who merely “criticize” Israeli policies and those who “delegitimize” the State, inviting repression against “delegitimizers” while advocating engagement with less severe “critics.” According to the report, delegitimizers include those who: (1) single out the Israeli government for its failure to abide by international law and seek to hold its political and military leaders accountable under universal jurisdiction; (2) label recent Israeli military attacks on Palestinians and neighboring countries war crimes, crimes against humanity, or aggression; (3) describe Israeli settlements in the occupied territories as “illegal and immoral”; (4) demand an end to discrimination against Palestinians within Israel’s 1967 boundaries; (5) criticize the Israeli blockade of Gaza as illegal collective punishment; (6) label the Israeli government as a “pariah, apartheid state”; (7) refuse to accept Israel’s “right to exist”[4] or the right of the Jewish people to self-determination; or (8) call for a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

However, the Reut report omits mention of an ironic fact that although South Africa’s apartheid system was “brought down,” South Africa remained in existence and has fully regained its legitimacy post-apartheid. One could conclude from this fact that those who participated in the worldwide movement to end South African apartheid actually did much to legitimize South Arica while those who supported the racist apartheid regime were actually the true “delegitimizers.”
An editorial in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz noted that “Israel looks like a bully who has been insulted by a superior intellect and is now trying to fight it, arrest it and expel it.”
“Chomsky said he believed he was being singled out for his criticism of Israel, as well as his plans to speak at a Palestinian university. ‘They are carrying out an action of a kind that I’ve never heard of before, except in totalitarian states,’’ he said.” As the Israeli peace group Gush Shalom put it in their weekly ad in Haaretz on May 21, 2010, “Those Who prevented Noam Chomsky From entering The country –Aided and abetted The worldwide campaign To boycott the Israeli universities.” With the wide reporting of the Israeli government’s own academic boycott against the world’s leading public intellectual, the Israeli government and its supporters may have trouble credibly arguing against boycott as a form of non-violent resistance to occupation, discrimination, aggression, targeting civilians, siege and collective punishment of Gaza, and unwillingness to allow refugees to return to their homes because of their ethnicity.

More eye-witness accounts are coming into the public domain from activists on the flotilla. And it totally contradicts Israel’s version of the ‘truth’ (Israel spinning lies, damn lies and more damn lies… orchestrated by the likes of spin doctor extraordinaire, Mark Regev) about the storming of the flotilla.
Huwaida Arraf, one of the Free Gaza Movement organisers, claimed she was beaten when Israeli troops boarded her ship (she was on one of the smaller boats).
“They started coming after our ship so we took off and they charged us also. Eventually, they overtook our ship and they used concussion grenades, sound bombs and pellets. They started beating people. My head was smashed against the ground and they stepped on my head. They later cuffed me and put a bag over my head. They did that to everybody
Mr Paech, a member of a German opposition party, said Israel’s operation “was not an act of self-defence. Personally I saw two-and-a-half wooden batons that were used… There was really nothing else. We never saw any knives. This was an attack in international waters on a peaceful mission… This was a clear act of piracy,”

On the Mavi Marmara, the ship that Benjamin Netanyahu has dubbed “the hate boat”, Israeli soldiers who had been hurt were given medical aid. But some of the civilians who had been shot ended up dying because the Israelis refused to have them evacuated.
Accounts provided by activists on board claim that the first Israeli commandos to land on the ship were forcibly disarmed and then taken below deck for their own safety. Photographs now published by Turkey’s leading newspaper, Hürriyet, support this claim.

On Cowardice and Violence

I said this straight to Israeli agents, probably of Mossad or Shin Bet, and I say it again now, on the morning of the attack I was directly involved in the disarming of two Israeli Commandos. This was a forcible, non-negotiable, separation of weapons from commandos who had already murdered two brothers that I had seen that day. One brother with a bullet entering dead center in his forehead, in what appeared to be an execution.
I knew the commandos were murdering when I removed a 9mm pistol from one of them. I had that gun in my hands and as an ex-US Marine with training in the use of guns it was completely within my power to use that gun on the commando who may have been the murderer of one of my brothers. But that is not what I,nor any other defender of the ship did. I took that weapon away, removed the bullets, proper lead bullets, separated them from the weapon and hid the gun. I did this in the hopes that we would repel the attack and submit this weapon as evidence in a criminal trial against Israeli authorities for mass murder. I also helped to physically separate one commando from his assault rifle, which another brother apparently threw into the sea.
And lastly I have one more challenge. I challenge any critic of merit, publicly, to debate me on a large stage over our actions that day. I would especially love to debate with any Israeli leader who accuses us of wrongdoing, it would be my tremendous pleasure to face off with you. All I saw in Israel was cowards with guns, so I am ripe to see you in a new context. I want to debate with you on the largest stage possible. Take that as an open challenge and let us see just how brave Israeli leaders are.

Echoes of the past in Israeli ship raid
It was a military raid on a civilian ship bound for Palestine, carried out in the international waters of the Mediterranean to prevent the boat from reaching its blockaded destination.
When the soldiers boarded they met with stiffer resistance than they expected, and so they used force, killing some of the passengers and injuring many others.
The commandeered ship was towed to port and the survivors were detained, before being deported amid a storm of international condemnation.
The year was 1947, and the boat – the Exodus 1947- was carrying Jewish refugees seeking to land without the permission of the British military force in charge of Palestine.
The incident, which left three dead, is now seen as a key event in the lead up to the end of the British mandate in Palestine and the establishment of the state of Israel.
Israeli historians will be hoping that this week’s raid on the humanitarian flotilla that was bound for Gaza will not be Israel’s own Exodus moment.
