Shattered glass and injuries at Iceland parliament protests
Over 30 windows were broken during protests at the Icelandic parliament building, the Althingi, last night. Three police officers and one protester were also injured.
The 8,000-strong protesters also showered the building in paint and food colouring and one window was smashed at the neighbouring Domkirkjan .
Police and protesters never clashed directly and the crowds were held back effectively by fences erected earlier in the day. A large bonfire was lit in the middle of Austurvollur Square (outside parliament) and police described the vast majority of the protesters as peaceful. Nobody was arrested despite the high level of vandalism.
Several MPs’ cars were pelted as they drove away after the meeting of parliament ended around midnight; none more so than the Minister of Finance’s car.
The protesters were protesting various things; but mostly the perceived lack of promised government help to indebted householders. Many were also there to call for new elections.

Vigorously pursuing those allegedly responsible for Iceland’s 2008 financial crisis, investigators have got issued an international arrest warrant against Sigurdur Einarsson, chairman of the board of governors of the failed Kaupthing Bank.
An Interpol notice on Tuesday said Einarsson was wanted on charges of counterfeiting, forgery and fraud.
Einarsson, who lives in London, was said to be reluctant to come to Reykjavik for fear of being arrested and Icelandic authorities have refused to offer any assurances.

Ingolfur Helgason, the former Director of Kaupthing Iceland, and Steingrimur Karason, former CEO of the bank’s risk management department, were both arrested today upon arriving back in Iceland. They went straight to interrogation with the Special Prosecutor and are being held in police cells.

Iceland Is No Ireland as State Free of Bank Debt, Grimsson Says
Iceland’s President Olafur R. Grimsson said his country is better off than Ireland thanks to the government’s decision to allow the banks to fail two years ago and because the krona could be devalued.
“The difference is that in Iceland we allowed the banks to fail,” Grimsson said in an interview with Bloomberg Television’s Mark Barton today. “These were private banks and we didn’t pump money into them in order to keep them going; the state did not shoulder the responsibility of the failed private banks.”
“How far can we ask ordinary people — farmers and fishermen and teachers and doctors and nurses — to shoulder the responsibility of failed private banks,” said Grimsson. “That question, which has been at the core of the Icesave issue, will now be the burning issue in many European countries.”
“The taxpayer has no realistic prospect of being able to save their banks, such is the magnitude of their bad loans and their extraordinary dependence on central bank support,” wrote Michael Derks, chief strategist in London at foreign-exchange firm FXPro. “Both junior and senior bondholders in these insolvent banks need to suffer huge haircuts,” he said.
Forcing bond holders to “share the burden,” may help the euro region remain intact, Derks wrote.

Jackson was able to gain popular support because the Bank money manipulations and inflation had created a big recession, and it had inflated land prices, benefiting big land owners and stopping economical development. In a last attempt to stop Jackson, Biddle burst the bubble his inflationary policies had created, and brought about a deflationary correction. This put pressure on Jackson, but after a year of recession, the economy was clean by the deflationary correction, and the Bank was out of “ammunition”. Jackson had won the battle. The Bank continued his operations as a state bank, but had to close years after. Once retired, everytime Jackson was asked what was his biggest achievement as president he answered: “I killed the Bank”.

Hello there Cuthulan, Everything you say is right, but you miss one vital point, The elected Dictatorships are not messing things up in a real sense, they are doing exactly what they were selected to do. They are baillifs for the Bankers. The UK has just started, what may well be the last robbery of the British people. We will soon all be in deep doo dah, with the European Fascists controlling us from Brussels.
Hi enochered ,always good to hear your views. I agree again, I would also say the “system” is not broken ,its designed to repeat and produce the same results and keep the same people in the same postions. Things change and rearrange but basicaly remain the same.
We must find a way to break the chains , destroy the apparatus of oppression and stop the system from repeating again.
I believe we are starting to win. The obvious vulgar display of power with the Lybia war, makes me believe they are starting to get desparate….desparate people do desparate things and tend to leave obvious clues.
The British people are awakening and the government can only keep beating the population for so long.
Already most people have switched off the BBC …….and the protests are just getting bigger
we have beaten them before , I believe we can beat them again, and I believe we are starting to win this war, thanks to bloggers like yourself spreading info ,and the people taking to the streets even when they know they will face clubs and gas and horse charges!! All of them heroes!!
