A newly independent Scotland could start afresh without the burden of having to pay off some of the UK’s massive debt mountain, according to a leading academic.
According to the Scottish Sun on Sunday, Doctor Matt Qvortrup has said international precedent backs his view that a Yes vote could result in Scotland freeing itself from a £125bn UK debt liability.
According to Doctor Qvortrup, Scots could be presented with an opportunity to ‘vote Yes and send the bill to David Cameron’.
Speaking to the newspaper, the academic said: “Of course I am neutral and just an observer, but the world deserves to know the facts. Personally speaking, I think this could be a game changer.”
He said: “If Alex Salmond doesn’t want to share the debt and is happy to reapply to Europe, the default position in international law is that Scotland would not have to pick up the debt.
“That has to be known to the people before the vote next year so that David Cameron will know we are starting negotiations from the position that UK (remainder of UK) is the successor state. That has consequences. The one that pays the debt is the successor state.
“If you want to be the EU successor state and be in the UN Security Council, you can. You take all the spoils – but you also take the baggage.”
Doctor Qvortrup’s views are backed he says by historical examples of single entities becoming two separate states. In a new report which studied examples since 1830, Doctor Qvortrup looked at the aftermath of Belgium leaving the Netherlands, the break-up of the former Soviet Union and the break-up of Yugoslavia.
His research revealed that countries which split equally took on their respective share of any debts built up over the period of their union. However, where one country assumed the role of ‘successor state’ and with it the old memberships of organisations like the EU and UN, then that country shouldered all of the debt.
Doctor Qvortrup added: “In Yugoslavia, Serbia Montenegro wanted to be the successor country but they were deemed not to be – which meant they were not landed with the debt. The position Scottish Secretary Michael Moore and Prime Minister David Cameron have is that as long as they are the successor state it’s all good.
“But the understanding about them having to pay the debt could be a good argument for the Yes campaign.
“All other things being equal, Scotland does not have to pay its share of the UK’s debt.”
The UK government has already claimed that the remainder of the former UK would be the successor state and that Scotland would be treated as a brand new state. Westminster has also suggested that a newly independent Scotland could be prevented from using the pound.
The SNP has already pointed out that should Westminster adopt a stance that led to some UK assets, already partly owned by Scotland, being denied a newly independent Scotland then the logical extension of the argument would apply to current UK debt.

The Tories have now admitted that they would see support for Labour and the Liberals in Scotland as a pro-Union vote that the Conservatives would try to use as a mandate to rule in Scotland, even if they have no Scots MPs.
 
SNP leader Alex Salmond is today (Mon) making a whistle-stop rail tour of key constituencies, as the election campaign enters its final days.
Mr Salmond, who will visit seats including Dundee West, Ochil and Falkirk, said the Tories’ admission that they plan to use votes for other London parties as a Scottish mandate for any Conservative administration had handed the initiative to the SNP.
Mr Salmond said: “The momentum is with the SNP as we count down to polling day, and we intend to push home that advantage in the final days of the campaign. Labour’s campaign has imploded, with voters deserting them – and only the SNP can protect Scotland from the cuts agenda of all the London parties.

“The Tories have now admitted that they would see support for Labour and the Liberals in Scotland as a pro-Union vote that the Conservatives would try to use as a mandate to rule in Scotland, even if they have no Scots MPs. And that is something people contemplating a vote for Labour or the LibDems should bear in mind.

“Scotland has moved on from the days when the Tories tried to run the country against the wishes of the vast majority of Scots. We have our own Parliament and our own Government now, and there will be no turning the clock back.

“By saying they will effectively depend on Labour and Lib Dem seats in Scotland for any mandate, the Tories have handed the initiative to the SNP in the last days of this campaign.

“The message is now crystal clear – only the SNP can protect Scotland, and a vote for any of the other parties simply plays into the hands of those who intend to slash the nation’s budget.
“We are asking the voters who are deserting Labour not just to sit at home, but to come out and vote for SNP local and national champions who will help protect their communities and the country as a whole from the savage cuts agenda of all the London parties.
“A balanced parliament can be the bulwark against those cuts. In the last few days of this campaign, there is everything to play for in Scotland – and if Scots voters want a balanced parliament, redolent with opportunity for Scotland, they should vote SNP.”

I DO TRUST THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE . I have seen it to be more reliable and less corrupt than the will of the government, as 2 BLAIR ILLEGAL WARS and 2 government protected paedophile rings, can show.They still continue today with the governments blessing ,BUT NOT THE PEOPLES!

“Representative democracy” or “elected Dictatorship” has been a TOTAL DISASTER. It gives us representatives that DESIRE POWER and are open to blackmail and bribery. It has given us a government that rapes and murders our children and covers up for it and also has sent trained killers off to other peoples countries to rape and murder and torture the locals. This does NOT make US safe and YOU can be sure the government is only spending money on protecting ,the government. Just like in the days of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction , that’s mutually assured destruction for YOU and ME ,the government had nice nuclear bunkers to live in!)

THE SOLUTION IS DIRECT DEMOCRACY

Direct democracy, classically termed pure democracy, comprises a form of democracy and theory of civics wherein sovereignty is lodged in the assembly of all citizens who choose to participate. Depending on the particular system, this assembly might pass executive motions, make laws, elect or dismiss officials, and conduct trials. Direct democracy stands in contrast to representative democracy, (UK and USA systems) where sovereignty is exercised by a subset of the people, usually on the basis of election ,i.e. a choice of Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum, OR what I call an ELECTED DICTATORSHIP. If it is NOT a dictatorship YOU will be able to tell me what else YOU get to vote on otherv than YOUR CHOICE OF DICTATOR?.

If anyone wants to say ,I’m a dreamer ,or it’ll never work in a real world. FYI Switzerland has been a direct democray for a very long time! Would anyone concider it to be ,a disfunctional state, or an inefficient state or a basket case state or a laughing stock state? It has better living standards than we do, it has less corruption than we do, it has less crime than we do, it is involved in less illegal wars than we are…should I go on?!

Officially the Swiss Confederation (Confoederatio Helvetica in Latin, hence its ISO country codes CH and CHE), is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons. its a Federal state, with parliamentary system and direct democracy .

SO HOW DO WE BECOME A DIRECT DEMOCRACY?

SIMPLE!

We remove the executive powers from the “representative parliment” (OR the ELECTED DICTATORSHIP as I call it) and give them to the citizens. We just have to decide what the line is that the citizen population has to cross to make a law. i.e. 50,000 citizens needed to get a topic discussed and at least 50% of the population voting on an issue with at least a 50% approval rate. ALSO ANY LAW can be repealed, any polition removed from power ,any inquiry started, by the citizen executive(the people) at any time the people choose!

If we want to keep a “talking shop” parliment , a parliment like we have today except it has NO EXECUTIVE POWERS, we can. BUT I would also suggest we have a “NONE OF THE ABOVE” option , or the anarchist vote as I call it. This “none of the above “would also be included in the Preportional Representation vote. SO if 20% of the population want “none of the above” ,then we keep 20% of the seats EMPTY, thus saving on wages and expenses! This also means that if it becomes obvious that we do not need a parliament ,then it is an easy and NATURAL process to disband the parliament via the voting process.

This system of DIRECT DEMOCRACY will do away with the strangle hold that the POLITICAL PARTY SYSTEM has on our “democracy” and the institutionalised corruption that it brings. Can YOU HONESTLY tell the difference between New Labour and the Tory party today?

I WANT AN OPEN REFERENDUM ON EU MEMBERSHIP

As we will be a “new” European country we may have to re-apply for membership anyway , and so would England, as the UK will no longer exist.I am torn between a Norway example OR a Switzerland example as to what way Scotland should go in regards to EU membership. An open and informed debat and the will of the people will decide what way we go.

An early temple area in southeastern Turkey at Göbekli Tepe dated to 10,000 BC may be regarded as the beginning of the Neolithic.This temple site is the oldest known man-made place of worship.Through the radiocarbon method, the end of stratum III could be determined at circa 9,000 BC ; its beginnings are estimated to 11,000 BC or earlier. Stratum II dates to about 8,000 BC.The oldest occupation layer (stratum III) contained monolithic pillars linked by coarsely built walls to form circular or oval structures. So far, four such buildings, with diameters between 10 and 30m have been uncovered. Geophysical studies suggest 16 further structures.The monoliths are decorated with carved relief of animals or of abstract pictograms. These signs cannot be classed as writing, but may represent commonly understood sacred symbols, as known from Neolithic cave paintings elsewhere.
After 8000 BC, the site was abandoned and purposely covered up with soil.

The Gaelic language is the root language of Latin and Greek. It can be traced back to Sanskrit and ancient Hittite, it is therefore one of the most ancients languages on Earth. There are other even more ancient langauges in Scotland ,like Pictish which we need to study and preserve.

Norway is sitting on a huge Oil Fund and it pumps a lot less Oil than Scotland and has a lot less financial services than England. After the financial Boom time Norway is in a much better position than the UK ,these people must be financial SUPER GENIUSES!!!!! (or maybe they are just NOT corrupt)

A last comment. I am in NO way anti-English. I believe the “British” government has exploited the working people of England as well. The Scottish vs English antagonism just benefits the British unionists and is just stirred up for these very reasons. Divide and Rule is as old as empire.

Is there a problem between the English and Irish today? A hundred years ago in 1909 they where at each others throats! The situation in Scotland and England today is nowhere near this bad, and IN REALITY , very little will actually change after Indepandance. Business will continue as it does today between Scotland and many European countries ,new and old. Travel between Scotland and England would be exactly the same. The ONLY difference would be that the Scottish have control over Scottish resourses and policies, the very same would be true of England.

In fact England would face the very same problems Scotland would, as the UK the United Kingdoms of Scotland and England would NOT exist anymore.

If Scotland has to renegotiate EU entry then so would England. If Scotland has questions of economic viability so would England.

Can an English person please explain what the English economy would run on? Its NOT manufacturing , its not resourses like oil ,its not innovational technologies or agrocultural. Scotland excels in all of these and has a population of just over 5 million. Englands population is 55 million and runs on the financial services sector and selling Scottish oil for American dollars. Neither of these will last long either.

Out of the 3 “countries”, Independant Scotland , Independant England and United Kingdoms .My money is on an Independant Scotland surviving best in the future
